Test Automation Engineer II

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur

Full-time

Mid-level

About the role

You will develop, execute, and maintain automated tests that validate system behaviour across our financial applications. Working closely with engineering, product, and QA teammates, you will own automation coverage for assigned modules and end-to-end flows, and contribute to the frameworks and standards the wider team relies on.

Beyond script development, you will triage results, manage defects, and partner with developers to improve testability. You will work with growing autonomy on your assigned scope — self-selecting and estimating your own tasks, raising blockers early, and drawing on senior engineers for guidance on more complex problems — growing toward broader technical ownership over time.

Key Responsibilities

Test Automation Development & Execution
  • Develop and maintain automated test suites and reusable framework components for assigned core platform modules, covering integrated and end-to-end flows.
  • Perform targeted manual and exploratory testing to understand system behaviour
  • Execute tests across UI, API, backend, and database layers; analyse and triage results, identify flaky tests, and apply the testing pyramid for balanced UI/API coverage.
  • Contribute test scripts and jobs to CI/CD pipelines, and configure and run tests across multiple environments (e.g. staging, UAT), identifying basic integration points.
  • Collaborate with developers to improve testability, and participate in code reviews to uphold scripting quality and maintainability.
  • Manage defects through their lifecycle, validate fixes, and confirm readiness for release.
  • Identify coverage gaps within your scope, propose enhancements, and report coverage, defects, and quality risks to senior engineers and leads.
  • Self-select and estimate automation tasks, escalate blockers early with a proposed resolution, and stay current on relevant tools and best practices.

Collaboration & Growth
  • Provide informal guidance to junior engineers or interns and support onboarding when needed.
  • Support hiring by participating in interviews for junior roles and reviewing take-home assessments.
  • Participate actively in knowledge-sharing sessions and team discussions.
  • Work with QA leads and senior engineers to align your work with automation priorities and delivery timelines.

Technical Scope

Automation Tools: Working proficiency with at least one of Playwright, Cypress, Katalon, Selenium, Appium, Postman, or Karate, with exposure to others.

Programming: Solid skills in JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, Python, or similar.

Testing Expertise: Core competence in UI (web/mobile) and/or API/backend automation, with the ability to run basic performance or security checks under guidance.

Databases: Solid SQL for backend and transactional validation.

CI/CD: Working knowledge of Bitbucket, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or similar, with the ability to contribute test scripts and jobs to pipelines.

Domain Advantage: Exposure to fintech, banking, cards & payments, or regulated environments is an advantage.

Familiarity with:

  • Modern tech stacks and Agile methodologies
  • SDLC, STLC, and software testing principles
  • Automation frameworks and QA engineering best practices

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or a related field

Approximately 2–4 years of experience in test automation or software engineering with a testing focus

Ability to write and maintain automation for features and small systems

Experience in fintech, banking, or payment technologies is an advantage

Professional Certifications (Optional)

    ISTQB-CTFL

Competencies & Skills

Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills

Organised, dependable, and effective in fast-paced environments

    Good communication and collaboration skills

Comfortable working with cross-functional technical teams

Adaptable in semi-structured or evolving environments

High attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality

Willing to learn and grow toward broader technical ownership
